จังหวัดชัยภูมิมีการละเล่นที่แปลก สนุกสนาน และท้าทายมาก คือ การเล่นคลีไฟ ซึ่งเป็นการละเล่นที่หาดูได้ยากมากและจะมีแห่งเดียวในเมืองไทย คือที่จังหวัดชัยภูมิ ซึ่งชาวชัยภูมิจะมีความภาคภูมิใจอย่างมาก เพราะว่าที่อื่นในโลกนี้ แม้จะมีการละเล่นแบบนี้แต่ไม่สวยเท่าบ้านชัยภูมิของตน
สำหรับประวัติของการเกิดคลีไฟนั้น คือ ตอนนั้นได้มีหมู่บ้านหนองเขื่อง ตำบลกุดต้ม อำเภอเมืองชัยภูมิ จังหวัดชัยภูมิ ซึ่งเริ่มมีการเล่นตั้งแต่ปี 2489 ส่วนการเล่นคลีไฟตอนนั้นเรียกว่า คลีโหล๋น โดยการเล่นจะมีวิธีเล่นที่ง่าย โดยแข่งขันกันตีคลีไกล หากใครมีความสามารถตีได้ไกลก็จะเป็นผู้ชนะ ต่อมาได้มีการเปลี่ยนจากการตีไกลมาเป็นการแข่งขันแบบเป็นทีม ซึ่งเมื่อก่อน ระบบความสะดวกสบายด้านสาธารณูปโภคยังไม่มีมากนัก เช่น ไฟฟ้า, น้ำประปา รวมถึงความสะดวกสบายด้านการเดินทาง ฉะนั้นคนสมัยก่อนมักจะพากันไปอาบน้ำชำระร่างกายตามท่าน้ำ, ห้วย, หนอง, คลอง, และบึง นอกจากนี้จะมีกอไผ่ขึ้นเรียงรายตามแหล่งน้ำ เพราะไม้ไผ่มีความสำคัญต่อวิถีชีวิตคนชนบทอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะในช่วงเย็น หากจะไปมักจะพากันไปเป็นกลุ่ม ด้วยการสวมผ้าโสร่ง ผ้าขาวม้าพาดไหล่ แต่หากเป็นผู้ชายก่อนจะอาบน้ำก็จะพากันสูบยาม้วนใหญ่ ๆ ที่เมื่อก่อนเรียกบุหรี่ว่ายาสูบ เพื่อเป็นการเรียกเหงื่อก่อนอาบน้ำ

จากนั้นได้มีการกลับมาเล่นคลีไฟอีกครั้งเมื่อ 6-7 ปี ที่ผ่านมา และถือว่าเป็นกีฬาพื้นบ้านที่ควรค่าแก่การอนุรักษ์ไว้และสืบทอดเป็นประเพณีต่อไป นอกจากนี้ในปัจจุบันชาวบ้านหนองเขื่องยังได้จัดกิจกรรมการเล่นปีละ 1 ครั้งในช่วงงานออกพรรษาของทุกปีในช่วงเช้าที่จะมีพิธีตักบาตร, การแข่งขันปล่อยโคมไฟ, การแข่งขันฟุตบอล, การแข่งขันตะกร้อ, การแข่งขันวอลเลย์, และการแข่งขันกีฬาพื้นบ้านอื่นๆอีกมากมาย ส่วนในช่วงเย็นจะมีการแข่งขันคลีไฟเป็นประจำทุกปี

สำหรับคำว่า ผีตาโขน ในความหมายเดิมยังไม่ชัดว่ามีความหมายว่าอย่างไร เพียงแต่ทราบว่าเป็นผีที่มีรูปร่างน่าเกลียดน่ากลัวเท่านั้น ส่วนคนที่จะเล่นผีตาโขนต้องทำหัวโขนที่น่าเกลียดน่ากลัวขึ้นมาใส่ แต่ที่น่าแปลกก็คือการเล่นผีตาโขนมีลักษณะที่คล้ายกับการเล่นหัวโขนที่ภาคกลาง ส่วนที่แปลกก็คือ นอกจากการเล่นโดยสวมหน้ากากหรือหัวโขนแล้ว บางทีผู้เล่นอาจทำรูปม้าจำลอง เพื่อขี่ไปในขบวนผีตาโขนด้วย และผู้เล่นที่ขี่ม้าจำลองเรียกว่า ม้าตาโขน นอกจากนี้อาจมีการทำเป็นรูปจำลองของสัตว์ต่างๆ เช่น ควาย ช้าง เป็นต้น เพื่อนำมาขี่หรือแห่ร่วมขบวนไปด้วย
ส่วนคำว่า ผีตาโขน เป็นที่เข้าใจว่าผีชนิดนี้ เป็นผีที่มีลักษณะตาหรือขอบตาจะมีขนขึ้นอยู่มากมายและยาวออกมาผิดปกติจนเกิดการน่าเกลียดน่ากลัว ซึ่งการละเล่นผีตาโขนจะมีเฉพาะงานบุญประเพณี ที่ภาษาพื้นบ้านอำเภอด่านซ้าย จังหวัดเลยเรียกว่า บุญหลวง แต่มีคนพื้นบ้านบางคนเรียกว่า บุญใหญ่ ที่หมายถึง เป็นงานบุญที่จัดขึ้นอย่างใหญ่โต นอกจากนี้การจัดงานบุญหลวง เป็นงานบุญที่รวมเอาบุญประเพณีสองอย่าง หรืองานประจำเดือนต่างๆ ในฮีตสิบสอง ของภาคอีสาน หรือที่หมายถึง งานบุญประเพณีประจำเดือนสิบสองเดือนของแต่ละปี โดยรวมเอาบุญพระเวสสันดร ซึ่งนิยมทำกันในเดือนสี่ และบุญบั้งไฟ ซึ่งนิยมทำกันในเดือนหกมารวมกัน คือ การที่จะจัดเป็นบุญเดียวกัน แต่เลื่อนมาทำในเดือนแปด ส่วนงานบุญพระเวสสันดรเป็นบุญที่จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อฟังเทศน์ เรื่องพระมาลัยหมื่นพระมาลัยแสน เทศน์สังกาสะ และเทศน์เรื่องพระเวสสันดร ตามลำดับ โดยชาวบ้านเชื่อว่าใครได้ฟังเทศน์ดังกล่าวจบในวันเดียว จะได้กุศลอย่างมาก อาจจะดลบันดาลให้ได้พบพระศรีอริยเมตไตรในชาติหน้าก็ได้ ซึ่งจะทำให้ประสบแต่ความสุข ส่วนบุญบั้งไฟ เป็นบุญที่จัดทำขึ้น เพื่อบูชาอารักษ์หลักเมือง เป็นประเพณีทำบุญขอฝนเมื่อทำบุญนี้แล้วจะดลบันดาลให้ฝนตกต้องตามฤดูกาล อันจะทำให้การปลูกพืชต่างๆนั้นได้ผลดี ทำให้ประชาชนมีอยู่มีกิน บ้านเมืองอยู่เย็นเป็นสุขไม่มีภัยอันตรายใดๆเกิดขึ้นกับบ้านเมือง
